Voter Suppression Event Idea for January 2020 or Whenever

January is a great time to have an event that highlights the importance of voting and voter suppression.

Brave New Films has produced a new documentary short called Suppressed: The Fight to Vote.

This film exposes rampant voter suppression that affected the outcome of the 2018 midterm election in Georgia and the threat it poses to our elections all across the nation in 2020. During the 2018 midterms, millions of voters experienced suppression due to voter roll purges, poll closures, long lines of over 4 hours, missing absentee ballots, and strict voter ID laws that disproportionately prevented black and brown citizens from their constitutional right to vote.

This 38-minute film is free to show anywhere and can be streamed or shown from a DVD which Brave New Films can send you. There are no licensing fees and Brave New Films will help promote your screening.

You can show the film, then after the viewing have a discussion, then register people to vote and/or help people request their ballots. This event is scalable. My own chapter is having the event a movie theater. The event could take place at a member’s home or in a meeting room.

Brave New Films have also provided the links to the information used in the film and a discussion guide. I have attached discussion guides for your convenience.

Just fill out the form at the link below and they will send you a link for the film. You can also watch the trailer at this link.

If you decide to have a voter suppression event, please tag the event on NationBuilder with BC or send me the link at blackcaucus@democratsabroad.org and I will tag it for you. You can also make us a co-host on your Facebook events by adding @DemsabroadGBC to the co-host field. The more eyes that see your event the better.

If you have any questions, please let me know.

Thanks,
