Celebrating Asian Pacific American Heritage Month in North Carolina

I began this month in North Carolina, where I celebrated the start of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month with the North Carolina AAPI Caucus, reflected on AAPI history, and talked about making sure our communities are heard in 2020. It was great to meet with AAPI leaders in North Carolina, and I look forward to continuing to reach out to AAPI communities across the country through 2020.

CDNY annual convention

In April, the College Dems of New York held their annual convention in Syracuse, and I was honored to attend and speak with so many passionate, politically-engaged students. We discussed education funding, election reform, the importance of local elections, and the need to expand student organizing opportunities across our state. I can confidently say that the future of our party is in great hands!

I'm committed to continuing my work with the College Dems of New York and young people across our country in the coming months to give them a voice in our Democracy.

Meeting with DNC and AAPI leaders

Last week, along with DNC Chairman Tom Perez and other committee members, I met with AAPI leaders to discuss how to best engage AAPI voters heading into the 2020 election. AAPI voters make up about 1 out of every 3 immigrant voters nationwide and AAPI midterm election turnout soared from 27% in 2014 to 41% in 2018. AAPI voters are becoming an increasingly large percentage of the electorate in early voting and battleground states, so mobilizing our voters will be a key to victory in 2020!

Collecting over 16,000 period products for women in need!

For the second year in a row, I worked with DC Diaper Bank to collect thousands of menstrual products for women in need as part of our period product drive, and I’m proud to announce that we beat last year’s total with over 16,000 period products collected! Women and girls across the country still lack access to these essential products, but this drive is one small step in the fight towards menstrual equity. Thank you to DC Diaper Bank, which distributed over 160,000 period products to furloughed families during the government shutdown, and thank you to everyone who donated!

More steps forward for our party

Going into the 2020 election, Democrats are working to make sure the election process is as transparent as possible. We announced at the end of last year that we will be holding twelve debates. As we've gotten closer to 2020 and more candidates have qualified, it's already clear that this decision will help Democrats pick the best possible candidate. We also launched Organizing Corps 2020, a program that is recruiting and training the next generation of Democratic leaders. Applications closed in April, and I'm already excited for the incredible young people who are participating this summer. OrgCorps will help grow our party not just for 2020, but for generations to come.

Best wishes,

Congresswoman Grace Meng is a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives, DNC Vice Chair, and Assistant Whip for House Democrats.
