Monthly Member Spotlight
Bel Leong-Hong
Role: DNC Member, AAPI Caucus Chair
State: Maryland

How long have you been a member of the DNC?
I have been a member of the DNC since 2001.  I was appointed by Chairman Terry McAuliffe.

What got you involved in the Democratic Party to begin with?
After I retired from the government as a civilian employee, I was no longer “Hatched” and was finally able to get involved politically. My friends in the Clinton Administration persuaded me to get involved in campaigning for Gore, and for Democratic Party candidates in the 2000 election. I remember deploying myself along with five other friends to Michigan, helping in the coordinated campaign office, and knocking on doors for Debbie Stabenow… I remember feeling that I was doing something positive. I learned that the values of the DEMOCRATS writ large are closest to my own personal values, to the values that I grew up with as a Chinese American.

What do you do professionally?
I am a Computer Scientist by training, with a strong focus on data. Early in my professional career, I wrote a technical book, which at the time was considered seminal in nature, because no one else had written on such a subject, and quickly became a text in advanced data science courses. After spending 30 years in government, I started my own business, focused on Information Technology Management, cybersecurity, program management, and knowledge management. The company has been in continuous operation since 1999.

What do you like to do outside of the DNC?
I spend a lot of my waking hours helping Asian Americans advance in their endeavors, trying to grow the number of AAPI Caucuses, and mentoring younger generation of leaders. When I am not dealing with DNC matters, I am working on Maryland Democratic Party matters. In my downtime, I love to shop, and to spend quality time with my family.
