Hi all,

With the recent passing of Congressman Elijah Cummings, we wanted to take a moment to express our condolences to Maryland Democratic Party Chairwoman Maya Rockeymoore Cummings and family. Congressman Cummings was a true fighter for justice and he will be sorely missed by us all.

Grace has been visiting states across the country as 2020 races heat up, but no matter where she is, she remains committed to her mission of supporting diverse Democratic candidates up and down the ballot! I wanted to pass along this month's update that includes her visit to exciting events like the New Hampshire Democratic Party Convention and the Iowa Steak Fry.

As always, please feel free to reach out if you have any thoughts or questions!

Thanks,
Maeve

New Hampshire Democratic Party Convention

I had the honor of introducing my friend and colleague Congresswoman Annie Kuster at the New Hampshire Democratic Party Convention. There, I got to hear from our Democratic presidential candidates, speak to young people from Milford High School's We the People summer program getting a first-hand look at our Democratic process, and continue working to keep New Hampshire blue!

Iowa Steak Fry

In September, I attended the biggest Steak Fry in history! There, I spoke at both the Steak Fry and their candidate reception, and I again had the chance to see our diverse slate of candidates speak. In both my speeches, I focused on my commitment to amplifying diverse communities, our need to beat Trump in 2020, and our need to elect Democrats who will fight to support underserved communities.

I had the opportunity to visit Iowa in 2017 when I attended their State Fair, and I was impressed by the work they were doing on the ground to mobilize Democrats and engage with diverse voters. Two years later, they've built on that work and I'm excited and optimistic about what will come next! Thank you to Polk County Democrats Chair Sean Bagniewski for organizing this successful event and to Iowa State Chair Troy Price for all he does for our party across the state.

Visiting Montana

In addition to New Hampshire and Iowa, I recently had the opportunity to visit Montana with Tom Perez; speak at the Lewis & Clark Democrats Sponsor’s Reception and Dinner; and attend meetings with Montana labor leaders, health care professionals, and to discuss rural agricultural issues. I was moved by the stories I heard from Montana Democrats -- about the closing rural hospitals that impact both the health and economic growth of their communities, about the lack of resources and protections for LGBTQ+ Montanans, and about the need for further Democratic outreach and support. It's clear that flipping Montana blue won't just help Montanans, it will help us pass the policies all American families need.

It was also great to hear from labor leaders on how we as a party can improve and do right by working families. Whether in Queens or Montana, labor members are the backbone of our communities, and Democrats will continue to show up and listen.

Thanks to the Lewis & Clark Democrats and Sandi Luckey, the Montana AFL-CIO and Al Ekblad, and everyone who invited me to take part in these important conversations.

ASPIRE PAC's Adopt-A-State Program

I know that Asian American and Pacific Islander voters will be key to Democratic wins in 2020. And I'm committed to doing the organizing work needed to reach these communities and get them to the polls. As the Chair of ASPIRE PAC, the political arm of Asian American and Pacific Islander Members of Congress, I'm proud to introduce our Adopt-A-State program, where our leadership commits to increasing AAPI engagement and securing Democratic wins in their chosen state. Through this program, we're already actively working with Pennsylvania, Texas, Nevada, Iowa, and Ohio, and Congressmembers Ro Khanna, Ted Lieu, Judy Chu, Doris Matsui, and Pramila Jayapal have already signed on to flip seats blue across the country!

Taking a Stand Against Gun Violence

In the House, Democrats are working tirelessly to stop the epidemic of gun violence in our country and I'm proud to do my part. I introduced the Responsible Body Armor Possession Act to address the very real dangers posed by shooters who are protected by enhanced body armor. In an active shooter situation, every second a shooter is on their feet puts more American lives in danger. This bill would make sure mass shooters do not have access to the military body armor that has no place in our communities and streets.

Congresswoman Grace Meng is a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives, DNC Vice Chair, and Assistant Whip for House Democrats.
