MESSAGE OF THE DAY

1. NEW: Trump’s Positive COVID-19 Test

Yesterday, Vice President Biden delivered remarks in Miami, FL where he discussed building the economy back better for the Hispanic community, the seriousness of the virus, and the need to wear a mask.

  • We are grateful the president’s recovery has been swift and successful. But our nation’s COVID crisis is far from over.

  • In the 72 hours that Trump was in the hospital, more than 100,000 more Americans were diagnosed with COVID. And this week, at least 5,000 more will die.

  • Experts say universal masking could save 100,000 lives by year’s end. Biden backed a mandate months ago, and called on Trump to back one again yesterday.

  • Unlike Trump, Biden has put forward a comprehensive plan to get the virus under control and get Americans back to work again. He’s demonstrated the steady and experienced leadership Americans are looking for in a time of crisis.

  • Since the start of this pandemic, the Biden campaign’s top priority has been the health and safety of all Americans.

    • The Bidens and traveling staff are regularly tested. After last week’s debate, the campaign is taking extra precautions to make sure Vice President Biden, Senator Harris, other travelers, and the public, are safe.

2. NEW: At Vice Presidential Debate, Pence Must Answer for Failed COVID-19 Response

The vice presidential debate will be held tomorrow at 9 p.m. ET at The University of Utah in Salt Lake City.

  • As chair of the White House Coronavirus Task Force, Pence owns the administration’s failed coronavirus response more than anyone but Trump.

    • In February, Trump tapped Pence to lead the WH response to the pandemic.

    • Since then, 210,000 Americans have died from COVID-19, more than 7 million have been infected, as many as 400,000 small businesses have closed, and millions of Americans have lost their jobs.

  • Now, under Pence’s watch, COVID is surging across the country for the third time.

    • 34 states have more new cases now than a month ago

    • Hospitalizations are rising for the first time in months

    • There is an outbreak in the White House

    • Pence and the administration still do not have a plan to protect their own workplace, much less the country

  • Pence will need to answer for those failures tomorrow night. From the start of the pandemic, Pence and the Trump administration:

    • Left states and health care workers without necessary protective equipment

    • Failed to implement a national testing or contact tracing strategy

    • Refused to follow the most basic health guidelines

    • Lied to the American people about the threat of the virus

    • Contradicted experts

NEWS OF THE DAY

3. Economic Recovery Slows & Trade Deficit Skyrockets

  • The recovery has slowed dramatically, with nearly 8% of workers unemployed.

    • More than 12 million Americans are unemployed.

    • Job growth slowed significantly in September — with less than half as many jobs recovered as in August.

    • Only half of the jobs lost during the pandemic have returned.

    • There are now 2.5 million jobs permanently lost since February.

    • The recovery is leaving behind Black and Hispanic Americans — the unemployment rate didn’t improve for either last month.

    • As many as 400,000 small businesses have closed for good.

  • Numbers released today show that Trump’s trade policies have been a failure. Trump promised to “end” trade deficits, but the trade deficit is the highest in more than a decade.

  • Nearly 1 in 6 workers (26.5 million Americans) are receiving unemployment assistance, more than the previous week.

    • For 28 weeks in a row, more workers have filed unemployment claims than any week during any previous recession.

  • The wealthy and big corporations keep getting richer, while middle-class and working families are being left behind by the most unequal recovery in modern history.

  • It didn’t have to be this bad. We need to get back to normal, but we can’t until we get the virus under control.

    • Biden’s plan to Build Back Better will create millions of good-paying jobs and force big corporations and the wealthy to pay their fair share for a change.

4. Four Weeks Until Election Day, Four Million Votes Have Been Cast

  • While it is 4 weeks until November 3, 4 million votes have already been cast and thousands more voters are going to the polls every day.

  • A majority of states are already voting, including Ohio, which starts early voting today.

  • Go to IWillVote.com today to check your registration status, learn how to register to vote and what choices you have to cast your ballot, and find out where and when to vote.

  • Democrats are out-registering Republicans across the country, including in key battleground states like Florida, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania.

    • Today is the deadline to register to vote in New Mexico, and to register by mail or in person in Illinois or Nevada.

    • Illinois and Nevada voters can register at their polling place during early voting and on Election Day.

  • The Biden campaign has launched the biggest voter protection program in history: thousands of staff on the ground, lawyers, and poll watchers throughout the states to ensure every eligible voter can vote.
