Congresswoman Deb Haaland smiling in front of the U.S. Flag and the New Mexico state flag.

Congresswoman Haaland grew up in a military family; she knows the sacrifices made by military families because her family moved throughout the country during her father’s military service; as a result, she attended 13 different public schools.

As a single mother, she volunteered at her daughter's pre-school in order to afford an early childhood education. Like many New Mexicans, she had to rely on food stamps at times as a single parent, has lived paycheck-to-paycheck, and struggled to put herself through college. Through hard work and determination, she earned degrees from the University of New Mexico and UNM Law School. Congresswoman Haaland and her daughter, who recently graduated from the University of New Mexico, are still paying off student loans.

Deb successfully advocated for the Laguna Development Corporation to create policies and commitments to earth-friendly business practices. Deb is a former tribal administrator and has administered a local service provider for adults with developmental disabilities.

After a lifetime of organizing communities to stand up for New Mexico families,   Congresswoman Deb Haaland was elected as one of the first Native American women to serve in Congress.

VOTE PRO VOLUNTEERS

As you know, the opposition has been seeking to suppress the disability vote. We really need your help to volunteer on the Voter Protection (Vote Pro) Team. We need lawyers and law students for the hotlines and disability advocates to be poll observers. Additionally, for communication access, we need people to volunteer specifically on our Text Hotline and people who are fluent in American Sign Language for the ASL Hotline.

Recent developments in voter suppression attempts have also left us with a greater need for lawyers or law students familiar with the ADA and other Federal laws protecting disabled voters. If you can volunteer or can help recruit these lawyers or law students please email Ted Jackson at
jacksont@dnc.org at your first opportunity.

After you sign up, email Ted Jackson at jacksont@dnc.org immediately, so we can mark down that you have experience with disability and accessibility issues and get you assigned with the ADA team.

Sign up for our Communication Access Hotlines

VOTER CONTACT VOLUNTEERS

Voter contact is the primary focus for grassroots mobilization and winning this election over the next 12 days. You can search the voter contact opportunities nationwide on the Joe Biden Mobilize page.

The Team Biden Disability Coalition has virtual field office phone banks every Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. ET, you can sign up by CLICKING HERE. If this day and time doesn’t fit your schedule we have several other virtual phone banks that you can join:

Would you prefer to Text Bank? Check out these opportunities:

Lastly, don’t forget to reach out to our own networks! Our family members, friends, neighbors, colleagues, schoolmates, and care providers are more likely to turn out and vote for Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, and the Democrats when they hear from someone they know. Use the VoteJoe App to match your own directory with voter files and make calls and texts to your friends for volunteer recruitment or GOTV.
