Dr. Katarina Barley is a lawyer and a German politician (SPD) and the General Secretary of the Social Democratic Party since 2015. She was born in 1968 in Cologne and has two children. She was elected to the Deutsche Bundestag for the first time in 2013 for the electoral districts Bitburg-Prümand Bernkastel-Wittlichzum. In the same year, she was appointed Chief Counsel of the SPD parliamentary group. Dr. Barley joined the SPD in 1994. Since 2005 she is a Member of the district committee of Trier-Saarburg – initially as an observer and since 2010 as a chairwoman. Since 2008 Barley works as a consultant in the Ministry of Justice and Consumer Protection in Rhineland-Palatinate. She is, among others, Member of Provincial Officials Advisory Board of ver.di, Liaison Lecturer of the Friedrich-Ebert Foundation and a member of the German Red Cross.
