Niels Annen currently serves in the German Parliament representing the electoral district Hamburg-Eimsbüttel and is a member of the SPD’s executive committee. MP Niels Annen is a foreign policy leader in the SPD and, since 2014, Spokesman on Foreign Affairs of the SPD Parliamentary Group. Just as in his first term as MP (2005-2009) he is a permanent member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs. He is furthermore a substitute member of the Committee on Economics and Energy. His work focuses on Latin America as well as the Middle East, and Central Asia. He is the Chairman of the Parliamentarian Friendship Group for Relations with the States of South Asia. He is also particularly interested in transatlantic relations.


From 2010 to 2011 Niels Annen has been a Senior Fellow with the German Marshall Fund in Washington, D.C. Prior to his reelection to the Bundestag in 2013 he worked for the International Policy Analysis (IPA) unit of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation in Berlin. MP Annen holds a BA in History and Spanish from the Humboldt Universität zu Berlin and a Master of International Public Policy (MIPP) from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) in Washington, D.C.
